Fashion Show in Cabinda

From May 28th 2007Well I have gotten all better from being sick, it lasted a day, then another day to recover from being sick then we were back flying. We had 4 solid days of survey flying which was great. What I got sick from I'm not entirely sure, but I suspect it was a steak sandwich I had for dinner the night before. While we've been survey flying we have been battling low clouds that get in our way all the time, and still some equipment troubles. The equipment problems haven't kept us on the ground, but it will cause us to refly some of the lines we've already flown. Today we're grounded because we are trying to remedy some of the problems while talking with the office in Ottawa on the phone. Hopefully it doesn't make any problems worse. But since we knew we would have today off we went out last night. While we were sitting on the front patio of the hotel last night we were noticing there have been several models arriving at the hotel over the past couple of days. A man asked to sit with us and explained to us that this fashion show is to celebrate today which is 'Cabinda Day' the 51st anniversary of Cabinda Province. There were only 450 invitations available, and he offered us invitations. We still have no idea why he picked us to invite, but we appreciated it. We were all pretty tired yesterday evening and were debating whether to go or not. We did end up going and it turned out to be a good time. We showed up at a place next to the shipping yard called the Cultural Center where all the concerts and events take place. We showed up at the door and there was a massive crowd wanting to go in, however they didn't have invitations. We were let in, and to our surprise there was a free buffet with free drinks. We couldn't believe that everything was free, and we kind of felt like we weren't supposed to be there. We took some food and sat at a table, and soon we realized we were sitting next to the head table where the governor of Cabinda sat. A bunch of people came in to take photos, and some TV cameras filmed people. The TV crew came to us and filmed us eating. Suddenly the governor stood up and everyone else stood up, and followed him into the auditorium where the fashion show was to be. We were hearded to some of the front row seats next to the stage, still feeling like we weren't supposed to be there. It was a decent fashion show in the end, and we left just after midnight since there was no end in sight and it eventually got pretty boring. It was all very interesting because we never knew what was going on. What few announcements they had were in Portuguese so we had no idea what they were saying. We just followed people around, and organizers seemed to be expecting us. So all in all it was pretty fun! Anyways, hopefully our flying continues, and if it does I may actually see the end of this project before I head back home!
