I think we can agree that the fashion capitals of the world are widely considered to be New York, London, Paris, and Milan. This from a guy who admittedly dresses in faux Dockers and polo shirts on a daily basis (though occasionally dressed up with an oh-so-snappy pair of kicks), but that has always been my understanding. Some of our more questionable fashion trends appear to have made it over the Atlantic, and I thought I'd enlighten (warn ) you as to what we might be seeing on our shores in the coming months. What we've given Italian Men: That super drop-drawer, underwear showing waistline pant is in full effect with the youth, but with a Euro twist: The pantaloons aren't baggy, but tight, just cinched up somewhere around the, um, mid-crack. The effect is frequently that of a sausage half-squeezed out of a mis-colored casing. Kudos to our hip-hop culture on this... really appealing in all forms. Oh - and the underwear showing are either tighties or *shudder* none to speak of. Some of the more hirstute among the Italians (my peeps, to an extent) look like an underwear extraction would be akin to pulling a kite string through a thorn bush. What Italian men can teach us: The older Italian dudes (my age & up) rule. ALWAYS dressed well... beautiful suits, shined shoes. Casual wear is slacks and a button-down shirt. Shorts do not exist. Cigarettes are mandatory - this is not a lesson we can learn, but rather an affectation that we can admire, as vices are not allowed in our fair country any longer. When touring, we do not have to wear short shorts, white tennis shoes and tucked in polos - we can move a bit more slowly in nicer clothes. I'm trying to put this into practice. Results are mixed. What we've given Italian Women: Um, how to put this... we've given them pounds. You can spot American women from 100 yards away (sorry, but it's true - they're generally 20%-40% bigger in the 15-34 age bracket - and to be fair, i'm 10-15% bigger than the average Italian man, though no doubt 100x more masculine... and humble). Streaked hair. Not sure which direction the giant, face-covering shades went - us to them or them to us What Italian Women have given us: Beware - there is a new jean trend that I fear will invade our shores. Those Seven jeans that all of you ladies have invested ridiculous amounts in Soon to be obsolete. Why Because the pockets sit upon the buttocks, where God intended them to be as a place to focus the males' attention. Pockets in Italy are sliding down to the thighs - I kid you not. They now begin somewhere in the lower quarter of the butt and end up somewhere between the thigh/butt meeting point (thutt bigh ) or fully on the thigh. The effect can be jarringly similar to the cinched cigarette pants that their male counterparts wear. Please pray with me that these stay securely on European shores - can Homeland Security do something about this
