Fashion and Feng Shui

One thing I love about New York City (NYC) is that you are always randomly making interesting friends. I do not think I exaggerate when I say that I have made one of the most diverse and creative group of friends in NYC that anyone could have anywhere in the world. All my friends teach me a little bit about the things that they love. I think my friends in NYC help me become a more well-rounded person and are always opening up doors to different interests and different ways of thinking. My friend John-Paul Tran is one such example.
J.P. is one of the mostcreative people I have ever met. He is a creative tour de force! He not only works in the fashion industry already, he is a burgeoning fashion designer himself, a furniture designer, model, photographer, and feng shui guru. I met J.P. through my friend Txu, who used to work at the advertising company J.P. still works at. She told me, "Jean, you have to meet J.P.! He knows the coolest stuff! He totally rearranged our bosses' offices based on feng shui and weeks later, they either got promoted or got a raise. It's crazy!" I was intrigued, and my first question was"He's Chinese right?
" I really couldn't imagine an American knowing that much about feng shui. I met J.P. shortly thereafter, and yes, he is chinese. He told me about how from a very young age, he would constantly arrange furniture until he felt comfortable in a room. He didn't study feng shui, necessarily, but he knows what works the moment he enters a room.
When I moved into my new apartment, I had J.P. come to check it out to see if there was good energy. He advised me to put some more pink in my romance corner, and told me where to move my mirror because, apparently, you're never supposed to have your mirror directly facing your bed. Other than J.P.'s feng shui knowledge, I was also really intrigued by his fashion designs. So many times I would just drop by his apartment to meet him for coffee or dinner, and see the newest outfit he had just designed and created on the mannequin in his living room. I cna never resist, and always end up trying on his new designs. Everything I've ever tried on that J.P. created, I have loved. J.P.'s designs are interesting because they mix a bit of Asian influence with European style, but even more unique, is that they are designed speciffically for the Asian woman's body.
As an Asian woman, my body frame is smaller than most American women and shirts can end up being too long. Most skirts that are supposed to fall at the knee end up mid-calf on me, and pants are always too long, but J.P.'s designs are all perfectly fitted to my body. He says this is because he has often used his mother as a musefor his designs and proportions. I say the most sophisticated button down shirt on the mannequin in his living room once. A white button down shirt is a wardrobe staple and so simple, but J.P.'s version added special details that made it special. Not only that, the fit was amazing. I liked it so much that J.P. made one for me right then and there. He fitted the shirt on my body to fit my proportions exactly, and then used his sewing machine to complete the shirt while explaining to me the detailed stitching that was involved. I seriously never knew so much went into making a shirt.
One of J.P.'s goals is to enter the Chinese fashion market. With all of his creativity, the inventiveness and sophistication of his clothes, and his focus on fitting the body of Asian women, I know he will somedaybe successful. I got off the phone with J.P. the other day, and thought to myself---I would have never met anyone like J.P. in Seattle. NYC is just so full of creative and diverse people, and I can learn anything ranging from feng shui to fashion design and stitching from one friend. And all my NYC friends are good at such different things. J.P. is especially creative though. I certainly never thought when I was 16 that one day I would move to New York, and find my own personal photographer and fashion designer!
